“Leadership is essential. What helps schools improve is not consequences, but good teachers.”

The Center

As Albert Einstein simply put it, “You cannot solve the problem with the same kind of thinking that created the problem.”

The Center is the first focused effort solely devoted to improving educational opportunities for all Native American children. The Center will recruit schools that currently serve Native American children and will provide professional development and support to their K-5 teachers and administrators in early literacy and mathematics to ensure continued effectiveness and accountability. Background

The need for training of teachers of American Indian children could not be more stark. From national, state, and local achievement data, it is clear that American Indian children are far behind their peers of the majority population in terms of demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), individual state assessments, and the Northwest Evaluation Association Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) tests. Minorities consistently fall into this achievement gap. We must do better and intensive, sustained professional development is a proven route to instructional improvements and learning gains. The Vision Achieved

The Center has begun to help close this achievement gap between Native and white students by helping teachers help students succeed in the basic skills in the early years, en route to a host of educational opportunities that will follow. Learn More

Mission Statement and Values

The mission of the Center is to provide state of the art professional development for elementary teachers of Native American children in literacy and mathematics with the targeted expectation that Native children will reach, over time, the achievement levels of the majority population. Learn More
